Architectural feats

1. Guggenheim Museum

Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Museum,
located in Bilbao, Spain, is an architectural
wonder. The structure of the museum is
complex and abstract and has been hailed as one
of the most spectacular buildings of the world. It is
believed that computer simulations of the building's
structure during its construction period made it
possible to build shapes that architects of the periods
before the advent of computers would have probably
found impossible to construct. The museum is a
popular tourist attraction and houses some of the
best works of modern art.

2. Alhambra

Alhambra

The Alhambra
palace is a fortress of the
Moorish monarchs of Granada, Spain.
Alhambra means 'red' in the Arabic language.
The outer walls of the palace are built using sun
dried bricks made of fine gravel and clay, giving the
palace its name. The principal courts of the palace are
the Patio de los Leones (Court of the Lions) and the Patio
de los Arrayanes (Court of the Myrtles), so named because
in the centre is the Fuente de los Leones (Fountain of
the Lions), an alabaster basin supported by the figures
of 12 white marble lions, symbols of courage and
strength. Over five thousand
visitors wander through the
restored complex
every day.

3. Palm Islands

The Palm Islands
are a set of three artificial
islands, shaped like palm trees topped
with a crescent. Located in the Persian Gulf,
off the coast of the UAE, their construction will
add 520 km of beach to the city of Dubai, giving the
city more areas of beach than a natural beach would.
The rock and sand required to build the islands have
been quarried in the UAE and dredged from the bottom
of the ocean. The outer edge of each palm's encircling
crescent is a large breakwater, made of
rocks placed individually by cranes.
