The second son of a school teacher, Dhirubhai was born in 4032 in the village of Chorwad in Gujarat in circumstances hat can best be described as modest. Driven by hardship and
want, he had to drop out of school early.

In 1949, at the age of 17, he went to Aden (now Yemen) in search of opportunity, and worked as a dispatch clerk for A.
Besse & Co. It was here that he dreamed of setting up and owning a
refinery, which he later realized with his petrochemicals venture. Ten years later, Dhriubhai returned to India and started the
Reliance Commercial Corporation with a capital of Rs. 15,000.00. The primary business of Reliance Commercial Corporation was to import polyester yarn and export spices.

The business was set up in partnership with Champaklal Damani, his second cousin, who used to be with him in Aden, Yemen. The first office of the Reliance Commercial Corporation was set up at the Narsinathan Street in Masjid Bunder. It was a 350 Sq.ft. room with a telephone, one table and three chairs. Initially, they had two assistants to help them with their business. In 1965, Champaklal Damani and
Dhirubhai Ambani ended their partnership and Dhirubhai started on his own.
    


During this  period, Dhirubhai and his family used to stay in one bedroom apartment at the Jaihind Estate in Bhuleswar,
m 1968, he moved to an upmarket apartment at Altamount Road in South Mumbai.

Sensing a good opportunity in the textile business, Dhirubhai started his first textile mill at Naroda, near Ahmedabad in the year 1966. Textiles were manufactured using polyester fibre yarn. Dhirubhai started the brand"Vimal". Extensive marketing of the brand "Vimal" in the interiors of India made
it a household name. Franchise retail outlets were started and they used to sell "only Vimal" brand of textiles.

In 1977, the company went public.

Under Dhirubhai's charismatic leadership, the Annual General Meetings (AGM) of Reliance took on the character of large public spectacles. Typically held in large public al
attended by thousands of adoring shareholders, AGM became a day to remember in the annua calendar of India. In 1986, the Reliance AGM Maidan, Mumbai, was attended by as many stockholders, a record in India's corporate history. 

By the mid . 80s. Dhirubhai had become something of a living legend, widely hailed by peers and critics alike as one
of the greatest corporate visionaries in the history rporate visionaries in the history of post independent India. It was one of Dhirubhai's great dreams in life to see ordinary Indians enjoy the enormous economic benefits of being able to access affordable yet world class telecommunications infrastructure. He wanted Reliance to
spearhead a communications revolution that would dramatically cut down the cost of connectivity, and propel India into the digital age. His ultimate ambition was to make
the cost of a phone call cheaper than that of a post card. It! was therefore entirely logical for Reliance to enter the telecommunications space when the sector was opened up
for private participation in the 1990s.
The rest, as they say, is history.



-Dhirubhai left for his heavenly abode on July 6, 2002.




He is survived by Kokilaben Ambani, his wife. two sons, Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani, and two daughters, Nina Kothari and Deepti Salgaocar.


At the time of Dhirubhai's death. Reliance Group had a  gross turnover of Rs. 75,000 Crore or USD $ 15 Billion. 1976-77, the Reliance group had an annual turnover of Rs 70  crore and Dhirubhai had started the business with Rs. 15,000 (US $ 350)
