What is Desertification
Desertification The forest soil is moist which supports the growth of a wide variety of plants and useful microorganisms. Without forest cover, the soil becomes dry due to Sun's rays and the growth of microorganisms is impacted. This affects the fertility of soil. Loss of forest cover also leads to soil erosion. The hard, rocky lower layers which get exposed are less fertile and do not support the growth of vegetation. Thus, due to deforestation the fertile land gets converted into barren deserts or wasteland. This gradual conversion of fertile humid soil into a dry wasteland is called desertification.
